Money is Green for a Reason

There is a surge of people trying to live sustainably. We face threats of climate change, groundwater depletion, pollutants from mass manufacturers, and carbon emissions. The danger of climate change is very imminent and a bit daunting.

Along with the world, New York Times discussed the recent unveiling of an art project on Metronome’s clock that faces Union Square in Manhattan. The two artists, Gan Golan and Andrew Boyd, set the clock to 7 years, 103 days, 15 hours, 40 minutes, and 7 seconds. Sustainability Sells

Sustainability provides more than just responsibly sourced goods and job opportunities. Based on recent reports, products deemed “sustainable” are more likely to sell. These studies compared three different product categories: chocolate, coffee, and bath products.

The graph above illustrates that products with certain sustainability attributes outperformed the growth rate of total products in their respective categories. The sustainable products made more money than the regular products. Think about that. Even with a smaller market share, the sustainable products managed to have higher sales growth.

This is significant because one simple fact differentiated these products: one was sustainably created. People are beginning to search for those holistic products because they like to know they are making a difference. There is great opportunity for businesses to pursue sustainability initiatives.
